Back and Neck Pain Care

Neck Pain

The term "neck pain" is used to describe a variety of problems associated with the neck, shoulders, and even upper arms. Common symptoms include stiffness, muscle pain, headaches, and numbness or tingling into the upper extremity.

Common causes of neck pain include:

  • Sprained ligaments or facet joints

  • Pressure on spinal disc causing bulging or herniation

  • Muscle strains

The treatment of neck pain may include massage and acupuncture, as well as physiotherapy techniques ranging from manual therapy (including McKenzie technique) to ultrasound, traction and TENS treatments.

Back Pain

Back Pain Care

A large percentage of the population suffers from some sort of back pain, whether it be acute or chronic. However the good news is that most causes of back pain are treatable without requiring surgery.

Back pain can occur in a patient for a variety of reasons. In some cases, it is due to the structural fault of the individual's spine, while other pain may be caused due to pressure on a spinal disc. In most cases however, it is postural stresses on the back muscles that can cause the excruciating pain.

Even pain that is not located on your back can be a direct result of the spine. The pain associated with sciatica can be caused by the pressure or irritation of one (or more) of the spinal nerve roots. This pain is often felt as leg pain, numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness, even though the problem exists in the patient's back.

Treatment of back pain may include a variety of modalities, depending on the patient's specific ailment. Treatment methods can include joint mobilization, a structured exercise regime, electrical modalities, acupuncture, and especially postural education.

Poor Posture

Back Pain and Poor Posture

Neck and back pain can also be caused by poor posture. The stress of poor posture over one's lifetime can result in muscle imbalance and abnormal wearing of the joints. Because of the imbalance that poor posture can cause, the condition will continue to worsen itself overtime unless treated properly.
